Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM)
The first wave of Android devices was the mobile phone. Pioneer products such as the HTC Dream and Magic had consumers and developers grow in numbers and enthusiasm, many large manufacturers adopted the platform and a formidable explosion of models in various form factors followed. Google and its partners have skillfully evolved the platform to cater for classification of devices into form factors, API features and display resolutions so that a single application can work across many device sizes and provide effective user interfaces both in landscape and portrait orientation.
The tablet form factor to a large extent inspired and stimulated by the success of the Apple iPad has resulted in a large market of tablet models. The Android SDK has a well crafted mechanism for configuring an application to work on the tablet form factor as well as a mobile phone. Phones and tablets are quite common in characteristics, Some tablets do not have camera or phone capabilities. The main feature of a tablet is its considerably much larger display that makes it especially suited for surfing the web, watching photos or movies or reading of books and magazines.
Google TV differs from the other device categories in that the applications and content is supposed to be consumed from the living room sofa in a more laid back fashion. Significant to this is the concepts of 10 Feet Experience (content easy to interact with and fully readable at a 10 feet distance) and D-Pad navigation, selecting functionality using Up, Down, Left, Right, Select actions. You can have a single Android application work across Phone/Tablet and TV thanks to the well crafted developer platform configuration options. The user can access applications and web content while watching TV.
Android is catching on in the industry for other applications as well due to the rich programming platform and low entry cost. Not least the automotive and process industry pay attention and show creativity. Due to the intimate relation to what applications become developed for other Android device categories this platform unleashes and inspires creativity and promotes use of user interface idioms that users are familiar with from their tablets and phones. Android will be the the platform of choice for many upcoming industrial applications.
The Google TV platform is very powerful for supporting development of a living room experience that can forever change the perception of Television. While staying faithful to the traditional properties of living room sofa style of consumer engagement the Google TV platform platform adds Internet Access, the rich Android programming APIs, smooth video streaming and hifi audio. Turning dreams that the living room user never thought possible into an everyday commodity.
